Flats and rooms to rent in Whitehaven: which suits you?
If you've just landed a job in West Cumbria, the first search is usually "flats to rent in Whitehaven". It's worth pausing on that word "flat". For a lot of people arriving for work, a furnished room with every bill included turns out to be cheaper, quicker and far less hassle. Here's an honest comparison, so you can choose what really suits you.
The short answer
- Here for a contract, a placement or your first months in a new job? A furnished room with bills included is usually the better fit. You can move in within days, with one payment covering everything.
- Moving with a partner or family, or settling for years? A whole flat or house makes sense, and it's worth taking the time to find the right one.
- Here for a few nights or a couple of weeks? Look at short stays rather than a tenancy.
What a whole flat really costs
The advertised rent is only the start. On a typical unfurnished flat you'll also pay for:
- gas and electricity, set up in your name
- water
- council tax
- broadband, often on a contract longer than your stay
- furniture, bedding and kitchen things, if the flat is unfurnished
- a deposit, and often the first month's rent up front
Add those up before you compare prices. Something that looks cheaper per month can cost more once the bills arrive, and setting them all up takes time when you've just started a new job.
What a room with bills included gives you
With our rooms, the weekly rent covers gas, electricity, water, council tax and Wi-Fi. The room is furnished with fresh bedding, every bedroom has its own keypad lock, and the shared kitchens and bathrooms are cleaned every week. Double rooms start from £145 a week and ensuite rooms from £185 a week. There's one price, paid one way, with no bills to split.
The trade-off is that you share a kitchen and, in some houses, a bathroom. Our houses are set up for working people, so they're quiet and tidy, but it isn't the same as having a front door of your own. Be honest with yourself about which matters more to you.
Questions to ask any landlord
Whatever you rent, these questions save problems later:
- What exactly does the rent include? Ask for the list in writing.
- Who do I contact when something breaks, and how fast do they come? A local manager makes a real difference.
- How much notice do I need to give to leave? This matters if your contract might end early or be extended.
- Can I see the actual room or flat? Ask for photos or a video of the exact place, not a show home.
- What do other tenants say? Read the Google reviews, especially the recent ones.
Where in Whitehaven?
West Cumberland Hospital is in Hensingham, on the edge of town, and plenty of NHS staff walk to work. The town centre and harbour have the shops, cafés and the train station, with direct trains along the coast to Sellafield. If Sellafield is your main destination, it's worth looking at Egremont too.
